Welcome to March - Autumn 2015

MARCH 2015
 MARCH 2015

Things to Do in March

- Weeding
- Deadhead flowers
- Thin out Summer crops & remove those which have finished
- Tidy shed and sharpen garden tools
- Decide on Winter crops want to plant

SOW & GROW
Sow broccoli, broccolini and cabbage seeds in seed pots for planting later in the season.
Plant direct:
Beetroot, Asian greens, Salad greens, Peas, Beans, Beetroots, Carrots and Artichokes.  You may wish to try some onion and garlic but I usually put these in later in the season.

HARVEST NOW
You should still be getting produce from your Summer crops (providing that the weather has been kind).
You should be looking at:
Tomatoes, Eggplants, Zucchini, Salad Greens, Capsicum, Chilies, Figs, Strawberries and Raspberries

PESTS AND PROBLEMS
Keep an eye on the snail and slug population.  These pests can effectively wipe out new seedlings overnight. If you don't want to use snail baits, you could try a snail trap (try a small bowl of stale beer).

TIPS – GROWING EGGPLANTS      Plant eggplants in early Spring to harvest from February.  Before planting add chook poo to the soil and give it a good forking in.  Plant a good distance apart and fertilise regularly.
